Jane

Founder

When she bought a steep, rocky acreage in the Stags Leap District in 1998, Jane Chapin sought land and community, not wine. With sweeping views and the Palisades jutting skyward, the property attracts attention. Neighbors in the valley included her in vineyard events and persuaded her to build a wine cave, years before her own house with clay tile rooftops and wide dining patios was completed. Jane’s dinner parties soon followed, with vineyard neighbors bringing lively nights of wine and stories to 4 Winds. A lifelong traveler and seeker of beautiful food and drink, her prior enterprises included grapefruit groves at Florida’s famed Indian River, and an organic lettuce enterprise in the 1980s—a bold move in the then iceberg-dominated marketplace in Florida. In Napa she may not have set out to make wine, but the landscape practically demands it. “I’ve never seen land quite like this,” Jane says of 4 Winds, “and we are honored to be part of it.”
